I was never a supporter of NAFTA because of the reasons you stated plus the fact that in most cases the US seldom operates on a level playing field and "We the People" pay the price when we buy products made in other countries. The problem with open borders along with the Mutual Prosperity and Security agreement with Canada and Mexico is that it has relinquished US sovereignty.

Recently I had a conversation with my liberal attorney that said that animals come and go wherever they want; why can’t people? I responded by saying that wild animals take care of themselves and those that are pests get shot. I also reminded him that there are lots of borders within borders that include states, counties, cities, towns, and private property and that all are important to any culture because people with common interests and similar levels of consciousness gather together within the boundaries stated. People are gregarious by nature but are not generally comfortable when thrown into environments that are outside their comfort zones.

To answer your question more directly, I think that if the US constitution and our free market capitalistic system isn’t already too far gone to salvage, it would be better for the US to set the example of entrepreneurship, production, and the resulting standard of living that made it the envy of the world but instead of throwing "table scraps" to the poor and the peoples of other countries, we should without forcing our ways upon them, help them to do as we have done if they want what we have accomplished and let them live with their lot if they don’t want to make the effort.

On the other hand, and this coming from a conservative, I think that Americans should keep their noses out of the business of other nations unless they pose a direct threat to United States security and I think that we should let other countries defend themselves instead of "We the People of the USA" perpetually doing it for them except when they are allies and request our assistance.

It all boils down to power and money at home and abroad and mankind will continue to provoke one another until they discover that the answers are within each person and collectively to face up to and overcome the five passions of the mind: anger, greed, lust, attachment to materialism, and vanity! Welcome to the planet earth; boot camp for souls.

After two horrendous world wars and currently facing Armageddon, you would think that mankind would recognize the causes and effects involved that decide its karma.

My attorney friend also stated that "capitalism is predatory" to which I responded by saying that although there must be reasonable regulation of large corporations and alliances between monetary entities, If I have to chose between a Marxist-socialist run country in a world that produces nothing of itself but rather uses the pretext of charity and love to redistribute wealth by taxing the industrious VS huge corporations (groups of productive people) running the nation or world, I’ll take the ladder.

Please note that most progressive politicians play both ends against the middle by amassing great wealth through capitalistic enterprises, often aided by corrupt fraternizations, and once they attain power they name their own pay and perks (above and beyond what they legislate for the people) and do whatever it takes to stay in power until hell freezes over.

Private enterprise produces jobs for those that want to work and materials, goods, and services; while those that rule supreme in governments over enslaved peoples are highly paid regardless of their success or lack thereof, live high on the hog; are generous with the money of other people, but don’t produce a damn thing! They even conspire with enemies of our country and buy into false science i.e. global warming B.S. to attain their goals.

Unfortunately, in America we have experienced a rash of politicians that are the best that money can buy, and it has! While they live the lives of Roman Senators and seventeenth century kings they have no shame; give only unsustainable or false hopes while circumventing the very reasonable controls of free-market enterprises they are supposed to guard so that Goldman-Sachs and Wall Street could make billions at the expense of the people and demise of America and the world in general! And, of course these sleazy politicians receive huge amounts of campaign money from those that they help skirt the laws… corruption at its best!

The bottom line is that "We the People" had better reign in every politician up for reelection by forcing them by whatever kind of party necessary including "Tea" to walk a straight line and be held accountable for their actions or lack thereof and it must begin with the November 2010 elections via an enforceable contract with America that must include term limits for congress, pay according to the results of their actions or lack thereof, and no lifetime benefits after they leave office having only served four to twelve years! That’s just a start; I’ll be posting a full "contract with America" draft soon.

"Mexican Farm Income: NAFTA-required changes have resulted in literally millions of Mexican peasant farmers leaving their small farms and their livelihoods and being forced to migrate. The land redistribution program established in the Mexican Constitution at the time of the Mexican Revolution was changed to meet NAFTA's foreign investor protection requirements-- meaning that, for the first time in 80, years small farmers could lose their land to bad debt. Projections range up to 15 million displaced Mexican small farmers because of NAFTA's agriculture provisions. At the start of NAFTA, more than one quarter of Mexican workers were employed in agricultural production. While overall population growth in Mexico over the past decade was 20%, rural population growth is now 6% while urban population growth is 44%, showing a trend of displaced farmers migrating to Mexico's cities, where unemployment rates are high, or to the north."

Why is it such a problem if we allow open borders? It would be only fair that we allow them into our country for jobs and education. They are leaving mexico because of a US backed dictatorship that we financially supported. We supported these dictatorships so we could exploit the mexican population. When the America's signed NAFTA 15 million mexican farmers went out of work, because it is cheaper to produce corn in the US than it is in Mexico. When the Mexican people tried to rise up against NAFTA and the government, in the for of the EZLN, they were squashed because of the superior mexican military that the US helped fund. Instead of beefing up border patrol, and building a giant fence, why not spend money on Mexican schools and new deal type large scale government jobs. That way can bring mexico to the first world so they wouldn't have much of a reason to leave.

Stan's response: Thanks for your input; it appears that the American Union bunch that includes President Bush don't care who they hurt to get what they want. I am about to update my blog that addresses this issue and several others.
